October Sky is a movie that I always devote 2-3 class periods to show the film in its entirety to my 9th grade earth science students. It is a phenomenal film that "every student should see" (stated by several of my freshmen over the years!) It is the real story of Homer Hickham and the "Rocket Boys" who were inspired to enter a science fair in the 1950's shortly after the launch of Sputnik.
I use this film for a number of purposes, however, one is to introduce my students to the history of the U.S. space program. They are asked to conduct research and prepare two different products during the course of this largely out-of-class assignment.
This assignment has been used as an interdisciplinary assignment where English (Language Arts) and History teachers have joined with me in evaluating student work.
There is also a technology component to this assignment.
