PPT in PDF format is for the ode to the french fries in Spanish by Pablo Neruda. PPT also contains several reading comprehension questions in Spanish.
Afterwards students work with a partner or group of three students to write an ode to a regional dish of a Spanish speaking country; flan, paella, tamales, pasteles, patacones, mangú, mofongo, etc. They select one dish and write a list of descriptive words. They should also think about how the dish smells, it's texture, taste, etc.
They also research the origin of the dish. For example, Guacamole is from Mexico and the avocado is indigenous to Mexico. It was a staple food for the Aztecs and Mayas. They also have to brainstorm and think of what other things resemble the selected dish. For example, Mole looks like melted chocolate.
They can also think of the nutritional benefits of the dish. For example, patacones which are made of green plantains, are loaded with potassium. Then they have to put it all together and write an ode which they will present to the class.
Students are reminded to keep the lines short and use as few words as possible for each line. Since it's a ode they need to use words or phrases that illustrate admiration.
