This product is meant to promote student thinking and discourse. Students must determine which of four items doesn’t belong with the others (the “odd one out”). It is up to the student to make a convincing argument regarding his/her choice of what doesn’t belong. In many cases there are different ways to look at the items and different items can be the “odd one out” depending on how the student approaches the set. The important thing with this activity is that the student must be able to state his/her case and defend it with mathematical arguments.
An “answer key” of possible choices and the reason for the choice has been included. In no way is this intended to be an exhaustive list. It is a starting point.
Speaking of starting points…this product is a sampling of Odd One Out products that I am working on. Please check back for the full version(s)!
