Quick daily vocabulary boosting activity (30 days worth) to encourage young writers to think about words they most commonly see in literature in a different light.

  • Goal: find commonalities between the words or phrases and pick the one that doesn't belong.
    • Sometimes it's sound, sometimes it's meaning, sometimes it's spelling patterns and it's always a bit tricky, but my 2nd grader loved them. (Ha, most of the time, sometimes when it challenged her she got frustrated so I simply gave hints and tips, I never gave her the answer. Still, every time she figured it out she got so excited she wanted to do another. Check out the video of her thinking through one.)
    • This is forces a student to think about high frequency words on a deeper level.
    • The answers are provided.
  • 30 Word Lists
  • Prompt writing or discussion with the sentence starter, "The other words are the same because _____."
