2.OA.C.3: Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members
This packet will give you everything you need to teach your students about odd and even numbers in a hands-on and meaningful way. Each activity is designed to provide students with multiple opportunities to model, discuss and write about math. Here are the lessons/activities included:
1. Making pairs with beans using tens frames or 2-column charts (numbers up to 40 for students who are ready for a challenge)
2. Explain how you know sheet
3. Odd or Even? number sort
4. Math notebook recording sheet, which can also serve as an anchor chart and formative assessment
We did these lessons over a 3-day period and my students absolutely loved them! I knew I wanted to find a way to push my students beyond just identifying whether a number is odd or even and these activities do just that! It is amazing to watch your students discuss how they know and share their strategies with each other. I hope your little mathematicians will enjoy these activities as much as mine did!
