This is a poetry writing lesson in which the students will create a free-verse style of poem following a frame. The frame has "built-in" sentence variety and encourages interesting word choice by asking for specific parts of speech in certain spots.
The theme of the poem is "Springtime." Included is an expository article about the spring season as well as a spring poem; students will use information from both to brainstorm ideas about the topic for their own poem. A "circle map" is used to brainstorm ideas and a four-square chart is used to brainstorm "springtime parts of speech." (This is a great year-end review of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and similes and metaphors too!)
Student examples of each graphic organizer are included as well as student samples of the poem. I made two different poem frames; one is modified for lower-level language learners.
