This is a great writing activity to kick your year off with! It's more creative than having your students write the old "What I Did This Summer" essay. In this activity, your students will explore the concept of an ode. They'll read sample odes such as "An Ode To My iPod" and "An Ode to Justin Bieber's Hair." Your students will talk about the literary concepts such as tone and mood. They'll learn what an ode is and how to create one. This packet has everything you need to have your students pen their own odes. And once they've done this, they'll write an ode to summer that you'll be able to proudly display on your bulletin board.
This packet is 14 pages in length. It contains:
-5 sample odes (can be used as printables or overhead)
-Summer Ode grading rubric
-Summer Ode brainstorm transparency page
-Pencil Ode cooperative writing activity
-Pencil Ode brainstorm transparency page
-Summer Ode frame (in which your students can illustrate a picture to coincide with their ode)
-Flip Flop art portion idea to go along with the summer odes (really makes your bulletin board pop)
-Tone and Mood Transparency (2 in all)
-Teacher Notes page (Explains the procedure and items in this packet)
I hope you enjoy this activity as much as my students and I do!
