I wrote this poem in 1977 when I was in middle school. Although it’s close to 40 years old, middle school pretty much remains the same to this day. In 2006, I rediscovered my little poem in one of my many journals, so I illustrated and made it into this little book, for my son who was entering the middle school years.
It's a day in the life look at a middle schoolers week. It's simply written, suitable for an elementary student to read, yet geared and relatable towards middle schoolers. All handwritten and hand drawn by me.
My story is to persuade students - particularly during the identity crisis of the middle school years - to start their own journey expressing themselves, whether it be keeping a diary, doodling in notebooks, writing their thoughts, dreams, poems, jokes, or stories.
I hope your students will enjoy my book. My hope is that they will be encouraged to write and express on their own, celebrating being the only one-of-a-kind in this great big world.
