Help students experience and explain the function of figurative language with the beautiful, imaginative poem "Ode to My Socks" by Pablo Neruda.
Download includes both a PDF and Mac pages version of the following:
- detailed lesson plan, tied to standards with helpful hints
- in depth writing prompt
- graphic organizer
- detailed rubric, tied to ELA CC standards
Students will first work on a CLOSE reading of the poem (you will need your own edition as it is not included in respect of Mr. Neruda's copyright) where they identify theme, tone, shifts, similes, metaphors, personification, allusion, and hyperbole.
Then students will complete a graphic organizer to assist in their analysis of the poem -- what figurative language is used and why the author chose to include it --- plus the overall effect on the text.
Finally, students will write -- and you'll have the rubric to grade them!
This is a perfect companion to my lesson on Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 -- purchase both and use one as a model with the class and have them complete one on their own to assess overall understanding!
