It’s often difficult to teach the Odyssey and I am always trying to think of new angles. This range of resources has been designed to maximise students’ engagement with particular parts of the text. Ideally, students should experience a range of learning styles so I have borne this in mind whilst producing them.

There are 7 basic learning styles (visual, aural, verbal, physical, logical, social and solitary) and I have tried to incorporate several of these within this set of resources.

Teachers often change the way they teach a topic to suit the students in the class as they hone their skills. One year they may opt for more of one style and another year they may try something different. Alternatively they may think that different parts of The Odyssey require a particular approach.

 Whatever your syllabus, teaching style and student cohort, you are guaranteed to find something suitable here!

I like to start my lessons with a short activity to get my students focused. Sometimes I like to include a short assessment at the end. I have used these quizzes and activities successfully both in class using a paper copy handout and as a computer-graded online quiz with Grades 9-12 (GCSE and A-Level Classical Civilization in the UK) and in adult evening classes.

The short activities such are useful both for building into a lesson or as a stand-by. Once students have studied the topic they can be used as a review activity, bell ringer, warm up, brain break, exit, close down or when you just need to do some essential class admin. The longer activities are suitable for homework whilst the multimedia ones could be used as part of a class project.

Higher order critical thinking questions suitable as essay questions or for class discussions are also included.

After explaining the chosen activity and setting the time limit (5-10 mins for a bell ringer or longer for a class activity), they can be used by individual students, pairs or small groups.

Each student is provided with a handout. Teacher's instructions and answers are included.

The cover sheet and some activities are in colour but the majority of the product is ink-friendly with grey-scale versions for when an overhead is used. (Set to print from page 2.)

A link to an accompanying PowerPoint slide of visuals (available from my website) is also included.

 Check it out. There is so much here you won’t be disappointed!
