Product Description
This is a Common Core aligned essay assignment that asks students to look a little outside of the box in terms of heroic ideal in The Odyssey. Students are to consider what a hero is through Odysseus, and then write an essay that analyzes the heroic nature of his wife and son, whose actions make Odysseus’ journey worthwhile. It is aligned to both ELA 9-10 and 11-12 Common Core State Standards, and includes the following:
1.) Plan Overview and Common Core Alignment Information
2.) Essay Instructions and Outline Form
3.) Brainstorming Activity Form
4.) PowerPoint with Paragraph Examples
5.) Peer Critique Forms
6.) Teacher Evaluation Rubric
7.) Essay Project Submission Form for all documents.

COMMON CORE STANDARDS ALIGNMENT (Reading Literature 9-10 & 11-12):
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.3 Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain.
