This research project works well before reading The Odyssey. The selected gods, goddesses, and heros are all characters that appear at some point during The Odyssey. There are 10 total gods, goddesses, and heros for research. This project asks students to summarize and paraphrase information they find, as well as cite using MLA. There are examples in the instructions for students to follow. Students also get to use their creative side, illustrating symbols for their assigned character and making a one page poster with all their information. This project is a fun way for students to gain valuable knowledge before starting to read The Odyssey. It can work well with groups of three, or can be done individually. I ask my students to work in groups of three, and then each group presents their information while the other students take notes. By the end of the lesson, students have the background knowledge of important characters you will want them to know about while reading.
This is an assignment sheet for students. You will need to either have your students complete the research on the Internet, or you will need to provide books for them to use. This assignment tells students what to do, but is not the actual research.
