Tired of grading the same-old literary analysis papers? Is your grading pile too big, and you want a fun new way to assess students’ insights and writing?
Here’s your answer! This activity can be used as an assessment on its own or to complement an exam or other more traditional assessment.
Using a mix of their own words and Sophocles’, students will write a poem based on the play which includes major themes, symbols, and ideas. Maybe they'll write from the perspective of Oedipus or Jocasta or Creon or Tiresias? I even had one student write from the perspective of the infamous bed (it was seriously amazing).
They will then analyze their own poem in a well-structured, analytical paragraph.
Assignment sheet with sample poem & paragraph (written by me, using a mix of my own words and those of Sophocles in the poem)
Step-by-step process instructions
(for use with all students or just those who need some extra help)
Students have loved this assignment, and it is so much faster to grade and more interesting to read than ponderous thesis papers.
