I Have Taught Oedipus For Six Years; We Are Good Friends!
Lessons & Activities
In this Common Core Aligned unit for the Greek Tragedy “Oedipus Rex,” there are fifteen Power Points and ten handouts included.
By the end of this curriculum unit which lasts for two weeks, students will be able to understand :
★The origin and development of drama in Athens in the 5th and 6th centuries BC.
★The similarities & differences between ancient Greek drama and modern dramatics forms.
★Ancient Greek religion and its role in mythology.
★Apply many literary terms to the play such as situational, dramatic, and verbal irony!
The many activities in this unit include learning stations, character development with magazine cutouts, and a review game called “Pass the Board.”
At the end of the unit, I allow my students to watch “Troy” and students compare and contrast Achilles to Oedipus using the literary terms. This activity reinforces what students have already learned and of course the video is awesome!
I allow my upper level students (honors) to write the essay based on the video. The chart serves as a guide and as the evidence they use to support their claims.
The unit will last for two weeks. I have included the ten lesson plans aligned to Common Core and the unit test.
Please Note the Following:
The textbook used is Holt: Elements of Literature Grade 10
