Students will have a blast holding a mock trial for Oedipus Rex in Sophocles’ Greek Tragedy!
Here is the scenario:
Despite Oedipus’ decree regarding the murderer of King Lauis, King Creon and the Theban people have decided to hold a trial to ensure Oedipus really deserves banishment because at the time he did not know he was actually murdering the King of Thebes.
If found guilty he will be banished leaving behind his children who will suffer a stigmatized future.
If found not guilty, he may remain in the city of Thebes but dethroned.
There are many factors students can consider:
The role of fate and the gods
Oedipus’ genuine ignorance
Oedipus admirable characteristics
Oedipus insulted Apollo’s servant
…and much more!
Students will take on the role of attorneys, witnesses (being the actual character), and jurors. Students must gather evidence and select witnesses as they decide how much responsibility to assign to Oedipus.
This is a fun, on-hands approach to review Sophocles’ classic play!
