This is an adapted version of Oedipus Rex by Sophocles with student-friendly language for ease and access of material. The script is 13 pages long and can be performed in under 30 minutes. There are 8 speaking roles and opportunities for non-speaking roles as well. The play has been broken up into French scenes (when characters enter/exit). The way each scene is broken up allows for student study of one specific scene.
(Script was written for my class of 30 students to be broken up into groups of 2-4. Each student is assigned a character in a specific scene, so that as a class we perform the play from start to finish--multiple students playing the same character but in different scenes)
This class activity/play gives students further insight into Ancient Greek history and allows them to experience and interact with the topic in a new way. Performance of the play pushes students to project their voices, speak with clear diction, face fears of public speaking, and incorporate physical movement and gesture into their acting.
