Oedipus Silent Tea Party: Pre-reading and Textual Analysis Activity → Are you getting ready to read Oedipus Rex with your class? Get your students up and moving with this Silent Tea Party. This is a rigorous activity designed for Honors students. This Silent Tea Party allows them to collaborate (silently!). They’ll walk around with a questionnaire to complete and a quotation from the Prologue. As they exchange quotations and record answers, they’ll eventually “solve” this “puzzle.” My students like that the answers are coded with NFL football teams.
After your students complete this fun--but rigorous--activity, they’ll be well-prepared to read the Prologue to the play. I do this activity after introducing the Oedipus myth and before jumping into the play. My students read a modern translation of the play online, and the quotations all come from this version. The link to the modern translation is included in the Teacher Lesson Plan.
This activity is also a part of my Oedipus FUN Bundle
