In this activity, students read a passage from chapter 2 of Steinbeck's novella Of Mice and Men and then answer a series of questions that are designed to practice analytical thinking and writing skills necessary for the Part 3 text-analysis on the New York State Common Core English Regents.
Whether or not you are reading the entire novella or preparing students for a state test, this is an excellent activity to discuss elements of literature such as characterization, conflict, and setting. Students also explore writing strategies such as diction as they are asked to consider Steinbeck's word choice.
For this activity, students read and annotate the passage, then provide analysis of the text citing evidence from the provided passage.
