This lesson incorporates the ideas of segregation and isolation as themes in the novel Of Mice and Men. It requires students to analyze and understand the character, Crooks, and determine why he may act the way he does. Students are required to delve into his fears, beliefs, and relationships and the effects of loneliness on health.
Students must write a poem from Crooks's point of view, following a rhyme scheme and other poetry criteria. This lesson was written for Common Core Standards and all of the reading and writing standards are included. Teachers can determine the most relevant aspects of lesson in order to write a rubric.
