In this activity, students not only analyze passages from chapter six but also from previous chapters to see how Steinbeck carries out a theme, conflict, etc. Students also practice skills necessary for the text-analysis response on the Part 3 of the New York State Common Core English Regents.
Even if you are not reading this work with your students or preparing for a state exam, this activity is a good way to practice close reading and analytical skills. Students use the passages provided to answer questions that are on the worksheet.
This is another opportunity to have students work in groups. The teacher can assign groups by reading and/or writing levels. The length of the passages and the depth of the questions vary.
