Everything needed to have a student-led group project, a Literature Circle, over Of Mice and Men is included in this lesson. The unit will require at least five days for students to read the text within their literature circle, with an additional two days for worksheets. A final comprehensive test (20 true and false, 14 matching quotation with speaker, 6 matching characters with their descriptions, and 12 brief answer questions) is included with an answer key.
Instructions for the teacher are included. A daily position sheet is included for assigning each member of the group to complete the written activities they are required to do during the five days of assigned readings. These activities include written directions for the different “positions” that each student in the group must complete before the next day’s reading begins. These positions are discussion director, author analyzer, illustrator, connector, literary luminary and word wizard. Directions for putting together a separate folder for each reading group and grading of the groups are included.
Monitoring is required for the first few days and random “checking” to be sure that students are on task is advised. This activity requires students to be active readers and participators in a student-led reading project. After discussion of the previous day’s lesson from the position sheets each student has prepared before class, they proceed in their group to read the next assigned section of the text aloud within the group.
The activity also addresses the reading, writing, language, and speaking and listening standards of the Common Core Curriculum. This project demonstrates the students’ ability to decode and respond to a literary text independently. The common core curriculum standards are included with this unit and an explanation of which standards are addressed by the unit.
