This 29 page unit packet is for the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Students address the issue of right versus wrong through many activities, including Socratic discussions over major themes, a character sketch essay, and a vocabulary quiz. The unit concludes with a mock trial in a real courthouse (with a real judge!) in which students play roles such as: the defendant, lawyer(s), expert witness, character witness, stenographer, artist, juror, etc.
Some of these handouts are for student use, while others are for teacher planning only.
I was able to perform mock trials with my students in a real courthouse in front of a real judge; however you can modify this in whatever way works for your students and your specific situation. This unit packet will give you an idea of one way to set up mock trials over the novel, Of Mice and Men, but you can modify it for any appropriate novel. Please feel free to contact me with specific questions! Good luck! :-)
