This storyboard activity is designed for Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men. It is an effective review for students of their prior reading and/or a quick reading check for the teacher.
The short novel is divided into acts and scenes. Students are then required to go back to the text to do a careful reading that will enable them to determine the props, characters, and actions that takes place in that particular scene, as well as do a quick sketch of one important part of the scene.
The assignment can be done over several days by having students work individually or in small groups to do all six scenes . If less time is available, the assignment can be parceled out to various groups of students who can do the storyboard in sections and present them to the entire class.
Act I includes three scenes:
Scene 1 – riverbank
Scene 2 – bunkhouse
Scene 3 – fight with Curley
Act II includes three scenes:
Scene 4 – Crook’s room
Scene 5 – barn
Scene 6 – riverbank
Included is a graphic organizer that will enable students to completely provide the information required for each scene of the novel. Common Core Standards in Reading and Literature and in Speaking and Listening are included for this activity.
