This activity is a great way to help students analyze the ending of Of Mice and Men from a variety of perspectives! It engages students in cooperative learning while encouraging them to examine Lennie's death from different vantage points by using lateral thinking strategies. The activity is student-centered, allowing the students to guide and facilitate their own discussions as part of the class or within their groups.
The 5-page packet included with this resource helps orient students to the process of thinking laterally by "putting on different hats" or taking different perspectives to analyze a scenario. It then has the students brainstorm to decide upon ways in which to discuss Lennie's death in a purposeful and collaborative way so that all viewpoints can be explored. As an extension, the packet also includes an optional assignment in which students can use their "thinking hats" to analyze scenes of moral ambiguity in other texts they may have read.
A 10-slide PowerPoint is also included to help your students follow along and stay engaged. It is fully aligned with the packet to help make your instruction easier!
This download contains a PDF to ensure compatibility across devices, as well as an editable Word Doc so that you can make alterations to best meet the needs of your particular students!
