Product Description
"Hope for Carlson" is a culminating critical thinking and writing activity for "Of Mice and Men" that examines Steinbeck's central theme of loneliness (soledad). It is a creative writing piece in one respect because the students are writing a letter to a Carlson, a fictional character. It is also a critical writing piece because students must carefully read and analyze an excerpt of a historical speech as well as make direct references to "Of Mice and Men" to select and integrate evidence, in the form of quotations, into their letter. The assignment teaches (reinforces) concepts of 1) tone 2) the careful use of rhetoric (pathos, ethos, and logos) in addressing one's audience 3) formatting a professional letter of correspondence 4) selecting and integrating quotations into a formal writing response.
