Hearing the actual poem which Steinbeck used as inspiration for his novella, Of Mice and Men, can provide a marvelous introduction to the study of the work. A recording of Burn's poem, to a mouse, is provided as both a 'wav' file and an 'mp3' file. The reading is in keeping with the nature of the poem in that the Scottish dialect is used. Students are then challenged in the associated worksheet to provide their 'translation' or interpretation of the poem, discuss what they have produced and draw parallels with Steinbeck's story. The tradition of oral story telling should not be overlooked and the nature of the activity provides an interesting dimension to the study of the piece.
