Description

Off The Paper! takes students from frozen to fluent. These fun, zero-prep speaking activities provide emerging ELLs with yes/no questions and short answers for a variety of target auxiliary verb tenses: are/is/was/were/do/does/did/can/could/have.

Many of my students want to know: "Teacher, in class, I can easily speak and be understood, but in the real world, I freeze up or can't find the words! Why?!"

Drill-based activities can be wonderful for aiding in retention of forms and building confidence when speaking without the support of textbooks, white board and teacher. Will your students be terrified when you snatch the paper out of their hands? Probably. Will they help each other carry on a conversation without it? Definitely. They'll carry each other through the trenches and come out ready to fight for their fluency!

Get students off the paper and into some great conversation!
