The Dr. Seuss classic, Oh, The Places You’ll Go, is used as a spring board personal narrative writing activity to begin a new school year as well as end that same school year. I have used this activity with third grade students, but it can be easily adapted for older elementary students as well.
The story lends itself well to setting goals, and life lessons in how to accomplish those goals. From the story we find there are snags along the way, but we can turn to others and use our own good sense to figure out ways to achieve what we wish to accomplish. Also, celebrating our successes is a big part of the goals we achieve and helps strengthen our life long paths of goal setting and accomplishments.
Reflective writing with another personal narrative takes place which when put into a decorated new portfolio with the original is a keepsake of their goal setting and accomplishments of the school year, appreciated by students and parents alike!
