Used this oil spill simulation to teach students about the environment. Perfect to help students observe phenomena occurring in nature and write about what they see, observe and notice in a scientific manner.
Students engineer a design to stop an oil spill from occurring using regular items. They must use number sense to figure out their budget and the amount of money they spent cleaning up the spill. When they have finished each group gets a chance to clean up their very own oil spill (use a large plastic bin and dyed olive oil) while the rest of the class observes the group and takes scientific notes.
