Oklahoma Math and Literacy Activities

This unit includes 102 pages of literacy and math activities for Oklahoma themed learning!

Included are a booklet on our state's history, our state song (for use in a pocket chart or poetry station), and a reader on our state's symbols.

Literacy Activities:
Write the Room – Print the colored cards on cardstock and laminate for durability. Hang in various spots around the room. Use the Write the Room and ABC Order pages with the cards for differentiated learning.
Sooner State Syllables – Print the colored pages on cardstock and laminate for durability. Students use clothespins and clip the number of syllables in the word. On their recording sheet, they may use daubers or color in the circle that shows how many syllables in the word.
Bison Alphabet Puzzle – students color the bison, cut out the pieces, and glue the letters in order onto construction paper or cardstock.
Land Run Rhymes – Print the colored pages on cardstock and laminate for durability. Cut around the shapes of the oxen and wagons. Students match the oxen and wagon pictures that rhyme. On their recording sheet, they color the pictures of the oxen and wagon that have matching rhymes the same color.
Dictionary Practice – Students use a picture dictionary to look up words. They copy the word, the page number it was found on, and draw a picture of the word.
Sight Word Stampede – Print the colored pages on cardstock and laminate for durability. Cut out. Students draw a card and read the sight word. If they can read the word, the card goes in the middle of the students,, if not, it goes back in the pile. If a student draws a bison, all the cards go back in. Students can also record words on the recording sheet as they draw them if you choose.
Tumbleweed Beginning Sounds – Print the colored pages on cardstock and laminate for durability. Cut around the shapes.. Students match the picture to the letter it starts with. On the recording sheet, they can write or stamp the matching letter.
Writing Activities – Print the colored pages on cardstock and laminate for durability. Hang in the writing station or put where students can reference them. Students use the pictures to label the picture, write animals, and use words to write a story.

Math Activities
Flag Fiasco– Print the colored pages on cardstock and laminate for durability. Cut out. Students draw a card and read the number. If they can identify the number, the card goes in the middle of the students,, if not, it goes back in the pile. If a student draws a flag, all the cards go back in. For extra practice, students may sequence numbers and then fill in missing numbers on their recording sheet after playing for a certain amount of time.
Clear the Land – Print the wagons on cardstock and laminate for durability. Cut out. Each student has a board and 10 wagon pieces. Place the wagons on the board above the numbers that you think will be rolled. You can place more than one wagon above a number. When it is your turn, roll 2 dice and add the dice together. If there is a wagon above the sum, remove that wagon from the board. The first player to clear their board is the winner.
Pioneer Patterns – Allow students to make pattern bracelets with pipe cleaners and pony beads or to make pattern trains with linking cubes. Then have them color the patterns they made on the recording sheet and write what kind of pattern they made.
Pattern Block Designs– Print the pattern block pages on cardstock and laminate for durability. Students cover the designs and then use the recording sheet to tally and write how many of each shape they used and write what they made.
Counting Oklahoma Animals Reader – These books copy two to a page to save paper. Students Color the pictures and read the emergent text. They trace the number word on each page.
My Oklahoma Addition Book – Students color the pictures and solve the addiction problems. Then, they cut out the rectangles and staple together to make a small booklet.
Number Sense Puzzles and Teens Ten Frame Dab – Copy the puzzles on cardstock and laminate for durability. Cut the puzzles apart. After puzzles are complete, students use Q-tips dipped in paint on the recording sheet to dab the correct number of dots to match the number.
Roll, Feed, & Color – Create tennis ball “people” for 2-3 students. Students roll two dice and feed the “person” that amount of pinto beans. This is great for developing fine motor skills! Then they color the sum on their recording sheet.
Color, Count, & Graph – students color the animals in the box, count how many of each, and record on the graph.
Count & Color – (Optional) Print colored pages on cardstock, laminate and cut out. Have students sort the shapes and describe how they sorted (some may sort by size, number of sides). On the recording sheet, students color shapes the same color and then count and write how many.
