Roll, Say, Keep
A Sight Word Game
This is a game to help children learn sight words in a fun way. There are 2 different sets of sight word cards. One is the 220 words from the Dolch Sight Word List and the other is the first 200 words on the Fry List. There is also a set of blank cards to add your own words.
This game is to be played in a small group. It is a great game to give an intervention teacher to use, or send home for families to play.
Print the game board and cards on cardstock and laminate them. Divide the cards into 6 sets and place them in the boxes face up. Children will roll a die to determine which box they will pick a card from. They will read the word and keep it. If they can’t read the card, they leave it in the box. If they roll a number of a box that is empty, they miss the turn. If they draw a special card, they do as it says. The child with the most sight word cards after all are picked is the winner.
Anna! Yay! Take 2 cards from all today! (Each child playing will give the child 2 cards.)
Snow! Hooray! Take 3 cards today! (The child will take 3 cards from any box on the game board.)
Lost my head! Oh ME! Lose 3. (The child has to give up 3 cards.)
Marshmallow! Oh NO! All your cards must GO! (The child will lose all their cards.)
