"Old Ironsides" (USS Constitution) is a poem written by Oliver Wendell Holmes. When Holmes heard that the ship was going to be scraped, he wrote this poem to raise awareness. It resonated loudly with the people, and the ship has been restored numerous times. It actually still sails today! What a difference writing makes!
This lesson includes the poem along with analytical questions and answer key. Furthermore, students will make real-world connections as they decide on an issue important to them and do as Holmes did - write a poem to make a difference. A brainstorming map is included with specific questions for students to consider as they choose a relevant topic.
Bonus: A link to a 28 minute documentary is included along with questions students can answery as they view it. Answer key is included. This was added as an optional activity for your students as they finish writing their poems.
This lesson will take anywhere from 1 to 3 days depending on how much of it is done in class and how much is done outside of class.
Note: If you have my Sub Plans for Middle School and High School English #2
, then you won't need this packet. Everything is included in that packet except the bonus activity.
