This product is a five page PRINTABLE document to correspond with the poem, “Old Ironsides” by Oliver Wendell Holmes.
First, the students will predict possible definitions of the words Harpies, vanquished, ensign, tattered, and conquered as per their usage in the poem.
Students will read/listen to the poem twice – the first time to use context clues to infer the words correct definition. Then, to label some of the figurative language in the poem.
The students will then create an original sentence using each vocabulary word and then use each word in answering higher level thinking questions.
There is one page dedicated to answer three content short responses and two figurative language questions.
To practice the vocabulary, the students will match each word with its synonym and antonym. Then, the students will create a visual representation.
Assessment is a one page “Ticket Out the Door” where students will show their understanding of the vocabulary words and use the poem’s format to create their own poem which follows the poem’s plea.
This lessons provides the students with to practice, review, and apply the strategy are synonyms, antonyms, and identifying poetic elements in the poem. It provides an immediate assessment and the opportunity for creative writing.
