From Electric English....
This is an activity for a film comparison of "The Old Man and the Sea". Once you have read and worked with the novella, you can view the film in its entirety, or if you do not have time for the whole selection, you can show clips of the film. Among other tasks, it asks the students to consider physical elements, character elements, and language elements. Most importantly, it asks students to consider how the director has used artistic license to convey these elements of Hemingway's work.
Please note, this activity is not designed to have the students rehash what they have already read within the work. But rather, to have them take the prior knowledge they have already acquired and consider the work from another perspective. There are several versions of the film; this activity will work for all of them. I have used the film produced by Lance Entertainment in the past. It provides some interesting comparisons for the students, and you can check it out from your local library if you do not own a copy :)
