From Electric English...
This is the assessment that I created for a unit on "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway. The Harkness Method is similar to a Socratic Seminar in that the students are expected to use the material and subject matter from the book as a springboard for discussion with each other. The Harkness method takes the idea of collaboration one step further however.... The students must rely on each other as a team to determine their grades. Within each small group, the students are assigned roles ahead of time; responsibilities they know they must fulfill to facilitate the discussion and ideas within their group. I have found the Harkness to be a highly effective form of assessment. The students genuinely enjoy the process, and they learn more about the novel in question, whatever it might be, and about themselves and their peers in the process. This particular product is the questions that I have cobbled together for the novel, along with, questions that I have written myself. Hope you give it a try :)
(NOTE: Everything else that you will need for a successful Harkness Seminar is posted in my store under Anthem: Harkness Seminar. I have not posted it again here because TeacherPayTeachers asks that you do not post duplicate items for space reasons. Thanks so much for your understanding.)
