PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

From Electric English...
I realize that often times people either love or hate Ernest Hemingway; there rarely seems to be an in between with this author. I happen to love his writing; that love and respect, I have for the artist, really shines through in this unit and with this curriculum. His works though seemingly simple and short are, in point of fact, incredibly complex and thought-provoking.

Often times, I believe, teachers shy away from this novella (even though it is perfect to teach for its length, themes, and complexity) because they think students will find it boring or be unable to relate to the ideas Hemingway expresses. With this unit, it is exactly the opposite.... Students gain a greater awareness of the world around them, and delve into their own perceptions and relationships with others.

This a a complete unit on "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway. I have found great success when teaching this novel to students because it makes them consider the world from another perspective, even if only briefly. Plus, the novel is extremely short and can be completed in a relatively short period of time. There is enough material here for 3 to 4 weeks worth of work if you wish to stretch it out; however, if you do not want to spend that amount of time, you can always just pick and choose the activities you want to focus on and get the novel completed in 2 weeks. I find it is always nice to have choices!

For the purposes of posting the unit, I only included the first and last standard from each category, but if you look at the lesson plans for the entire unit, you will see that a vast majority of the standards are covered over the course of all the activities. This unit contains the following:

- Powerpoint: Introductory Activity (The activity takes two days and leads the students through a series of slides with thematic statements on them that center on ideas the students will encounter while reading. The first day, they must briefly write down whether they agree of disagree with the these statements and why. On the second day, as a class you go back over them again. Students must literally, move from one side of the class to the other depending on whether they agreed or disagreed with the statements. As they do, the class takes a few minutes with each one and discusses why they thought the way they did. Of course, if you are not comfortable with them moving around, you can always have them discuss it at their desks. But having them move, gives both you and the students a visual of how many of them think the same and differently as one another. It helps spark conversation :)
