This 3 part emergent, interactive reader is so much fun to chorally read in large or small groups or even one on one. Students review many skills as they read/sing each story. The first story targets the short vowel sounds. The second story targets the long vowels and the last story song targets the digraphs. Skill pages reinforce the learning in a fun way as do the craft stick puppets. These are great to use for story retelling.

It is so perfect for kindergarten and beginning of the year first grade level. It would work well in many types of remediation settings.

RF.K.1. Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
Teacher Guide Suggestions:
At the very beginning of first grade, and all year long in kindergarten, the teacher needs to be focused on being sure the students are connecting the printed word with the spoken word. (I insist they are to use either the right or left pointer finger and we name it the reading finger). This reading finger needs to be tracking or pointing to the printed words as we read chorally in class. This type of text, like Old McDonald Had a Farm, is ideal to work on the basic features of print. The students are familiar with the song and so can get their reading finger moving rather quickly. The built in repetition helps the story unfold, moving through several pages rather quickly. This is when the teacher targets the teaching of left to right pointing and sweeping of the reading finger, top to bottom of the page, and page turning. Besides teaching the basic features of print, the vowels, both long and short sounds are being targeted. All of this learning is going on while the kids are enjoying singing-reading the familiar children song.

Begin with the short vowel story-song. Be sure to say the short vowel sounds (do not say the letter names). Read it together chorally at least two times. Follow up by making the vowel craft stick puppets. Let children use them to retell the story without the book and to review all the short vowel sounds.

Next, read/sing the long vowel story. Read it all together or chorally. Follow up with the long vowel stick puppets. Do the skills pages which target all 5 vowels, both the short and long sounds.

Finally, read/sing the digraph story. Use the stick puppets. Finish by doing the skills pgs. Laminate these skill pages so students will be able to erase after using dry erase markers and use again and again.
