Oliver Button is a Sissy by Tomie DePaola is an excellent story for teaching our students about making text-to-self connections and jumpstarting essential conversations about friendship and anti-bullying. We can also use this text to teach a variety of reading skills such as author’s purpose, sequences of events and determining theme.
This book brochure is designed to support your instruction and provide students with an opportunity to complete meaningful tasks related to the text.
The book brochure can be used for all students in first or second grades or to support students in later grades who are working on a modified program. Book brochures are also suitable for ELL students or for leaving as part of your substitute teacher package.
Through four different “I can” activities, students will write about the text. They’ll relate, reflect, plan and retell important events from the story.
Students enjoy completing the brochures and sharing them with their families. The novelty of having a completed “product”, so to speak is very motivating and the work is purposeful! It’s a win for everyone!
Heads up here:
While this is a print-fold-and-go resource, some extra-assembly may be required when copying your brochure. It is dependent upon your printer and the amount of space it leaves as a margin at the bottom of the page. When folded, you’ll want everything to line up nicely, but if your printer leaves a large margin at the bottom of the page, you may need to fuss with it a bit.
This is a three-page resource. You’ll only need to print two pages. There’s an extra page to reflect the Canadian/British spelling of color/colour and favorite/favourite.
Please don’t hesitate (and I really mean it!) to email me if you need something tweaked here. I designed this for my own students and first/second grade colleagues in my district, but if there is something specific you need in this resource, please let me know, I’m happy to help.
My email address is firstname.lastname@example.org and I’m pretty quick with these things, so if you need a word or two changed, do let me know as it takes no time at all.
Thanks so much for visiting my store!
