"Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens has been taught and told for a long time now, still to great effect.
The quiz utilizes contextual usage for vocab, younger native speakers or EFL students with a growing vocabulary. The following mostly refers to my other OliverT projects.
I used the Oxford Press edition, level 6 with some 10th grade EFL students. This explains in part why I laid out the language notes and story grammar the way I did. But the bulk of the project is content driven and asks critical questions throughout. Totally suitable for NATIVE speakers and may be adjusted where necessary.
It looks closely, not only at the characters and events in the book, but at the cultural and historical backdrop of Victorian England and class consciousness. While introducing the novel, student and teacher will continually return to it, as the story unfolds. It ends with evaluative writing exercises using target language, vocabulary and theme.
