These tasks are called "Write it Wednesdays" in my class. Generally, these tasks will take two Wednesdays to complete. In the first week, the students will solve the tasks and begin to craft their responses. After receiving teacher feedback, the students will revisit their work to make edits and also complete their final draft.
This is a literacy task as much as it is a math task. On the state assessment, students are often asked to defend their answers. This activity is designed to challenge students to explain and model their thought process clearly.
