After teaching about the water cycle, I teach my students about the following four cloud types:
I have created a unit that will keep students engaged while learning all they need to know about these cloud types. This unit allows for plenty of variety in your plans as well as opportunities for differentiation built right into the unit! My students will be completing these as centers and doing one center a day for 5 days. For that reason I have listed the duration as one week, but this could be longer or shorter depending on how you choose to implement the activities and which activities you choose to use.
Included in the unit:
Differentiated reading passages- Three passages that teach the same content about the cloud types at different levels. 840L, 740L, and 680L are included. Each passage also has comprehension questions that follow it. These questions, for the most part, ask the same thing in a different format. Students can complete the format that follows their passage or you can have all students complete the same format. Or you may have a strong reader, but that student needs help with answering questions, so you could select which question page to use for that child. These would also be great to use during guided reading when teaching about the cloud types. Integrating reading and science!
Mini Experiment- Students will use a cotton ball and eye dropper to see how much water their cotton ball can hold. There are a couple questions that students can answer and discuss included. This could also be done as a hook/demonstration activity.
Cloud Facts Sorting- There are two options for completing this activity. The first option is a center format with facts written on larger cards. Students will sort the cards based on cloud types and then use the facts to fill in the included foldup. After they write the facts in their foldup they will use cotton balls to make a model of each cloud type on the foldup. The 2nd option is a cut and paste sheet- students can just cut apart the facts and glue them into the foldup without sorting the large cards. This page can also be used for differentiation in the center. Students can all work together to sort the large cards, but students who may need to can cut the facts to glue into their foldup instead of writing them.
Vocabulary Puzzles- students will need to match the vocabulary word to the definition and picture representation. There is also an optional matching sheet that can be completed. The sheet can also be used as classwork, homework, or even an assessment. This would make a great center. You could also make multiple copies so that groups could complete the activity at the same time.
Task Cards- 16 task cards are included that can be used as a review before the test. There are options for how to use these cards included in the teacher notes section.
Test- a simple 10 question multiple choice test. This could be used as a pretest as well to show student growth.
Cloud observation and weather prediction log- students can observe the clouds each day and make a prediction about the weather.
