From Electric English...
This is a series of on-going research assignments that students work with and develop over the course of one complete quarter of the year. [Note: These assignments are scaffolded in terms of complexity. For example, the first assignment has the student find a poem they have researched on the web and consider just its diction; while the last assignment asks the students to research a new poem and consider all aspects of close reading for a text. These assignments have the students make inferential leaps about ideas, include in-text citations, consider formatting, and more, as well as, still generate that ever present MLA citation. And, I know, all of you English teachers out there, feel the pain of getting students to grasp the concept of providing the necessary information for their research. That's why these on-going assignments are so effective because the repetition alone over the course of time really drills the skills into their head. Haha.... I said, drills the skills...] Okay, back to the point, the material for this particular unit focuses on close reading of texts. Over the course of 4-7 weeks it asks the students to consider diction, style, syntax, and tone.
