Description
Getting students interested in historical events is virtually impossible! That's why we created our “On This Day in History'' series to provide a historical event for each day during the months of January to July along with a thought-provoking, Generation Z relevant discussion prompt that you can use year after year. What sets our On This Day resource apart from similar resources is that each prompt encourages students to think critically about “their place in the world” with respect to the event; not having them focus on the event itself. The “On This Day…Bundle B” includes all seven (7) months (January - July) of the first semester of school.
⭐All included resources are now updated for the 2022-2023 school year. If you have already purchased this bundle, please redownload the folders to your Google Drive.⭐
These bright, colorful, engaging, and relevant “On This Day in History…” resources make it easy for you to foster discussion among your students across a variety of topics, such as politics, science and technology, business, art, literature, and pop culture. This resource is perfect for classroom teachers, librarians, or an interventionist looking for an engaging way to bring in literacy and history at the same time.
You can use this no-prep resource in a variety of ways in any teaching environment - distance/blended learning or face-to-face. These prompts can be used as a quick bellringer to start class, a quickwrite activity, a whole class discussion starter, or in learning centers for informational/nonfiction text reading. You can use the weekend dates for Response to Intervention (RTI), as a homework assignment, for Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI), or as extra practice for struggling students.
As students ponder each prompt, they consider the impact of the historical event on their lives. Their responses may:
- encourage healthy discourse
- establish connections with other students
- promote oral or writing fluency
Robert Heinlein is quoted as saying, “A generation which ignores history has no past and no future.” While we can appreciate the impact historical events have had on our lives, it’s often a challenge to encourage teenagers to care about something that happened sooooooooooooo long ago (you know, before cell phones… the horror!). Making a personal connection is key to student engagement.
This uneditable Google Slides resource can be exported as images and used in any presentation software such as PowerPoint or Keynote. A digital written response slide is included to allow students to respond online. Prefer pen and paper? Print the included PDF file in the Google Drive Folder for students to write their answers on the index cards and sticky notes. In addition, you can further your student’s engagement by challenging them to find another exciting event that happened during that week and add it to their response slide.
