This holiday unit is particularly perfect for math and literacy centers. I have provided my original song “On the 12th Day of December My Teacher Gave to Me...” in poster form to either be used on the overhead projector, or hang up for students to see, and a Teacher Read-Aloud that I like to use to introduce the unit. There is a choice of student booklets, a full-size-page black and white that matches the teacher read-aloud, or a half-page version, whichever works for you. The activities are tried and true in my own classroom as well as my colleagues’! This song, like the original, plays on ordinal numbers and number words, sequencing, repetition... I have added prompts for problem-solving stories, and other activities to give our students lots of writing practice, while they are having some fun. It all culminates in the “Snow Globe-shaped” writing journal! Also included are vocabulary, number and number word cards, as well as math and writing task cards, sequencing the 12 parts of the song, mixed up sentences, and a labeling activity. It is my sincere wish that you and your students enjoy this unit of work!
Copy all the cards, and the Teacher Read-Aloud on card stock, and laminate for durability. The snow globe writing journal covers can be either paper or card stock, and add as many writing pages (master provided) as you may need. Then, I have a volunteer/ helper/or I cut them out holding them together so they are the shape of the snow globe. Also, stapling on top of the globe works best for me. Lastly, I included cut/paste activities because my first graders love them! Enjoy!!
