As part of my Postmodernism unit, I have students analyze an excerpt from "On the Rainy River" by Tim O'Brien.
This activity is a quick and comprehensive way to have students practice for their final exam (also known as MSL, Common Assessment, etc.). Students should complete this practice after reading "On the Rainy River" by Tim O'Brien. I actually used an excerpt of the short story that I found online and had students read that abbreviated version to save a little time.
This assignment asks students to rely on the excerpt to answer five multiple choice questions as well as a constructed response question.
For the constructed response portion, students must explain the meaning of a concluding line from the short story and support their claim with at least two pieces of textual evidence. A rubric is included. The rubric shows students how they'll be graded while also providing the teacher with grading instructions.
This activity aligns with the following Common Core Essential Standards: RL.9-12.1, RL.9-12.2, RL.9-12.4, W.9-12.4
