On the Trail to Digital Citizenship: Develop, Use, and Revise Search Strategies is Lesson 2 in the 5-part program on information literacy and digital citizenship. Lesson 2 teaches students in grades 3, 4, and 5 how to develop search strategies including: beginning the research process, developing search terms, recognizing and using books for research, using the library catalog (including an introduction to title, author, subject, and keyword searches), searching online, and asking for help while searching for information. Lesson 2 includes informational slides, links to online resources, practice quizzes/exercises, and pre and post assessments. Lesson content centers around Kent State University’s TRAILS online assessment tool that can be used with this program to monitor student progress. (Links to this assessment tool are included in the powerpoint.) You can use this lesson on developing search strategies by itself OR as part of the 5-part program On the Trail to Digital Citizenship. Everything you need to teach your students search strategies for the library catalog and online are included in this powerpoint presentation.
