Looking for a festival piece? A song your entire K-8 group could perform together? Something do-able that includes audience participation? Something that includes modern multicultural perspectives and learning opportunities? Something that will make everyone simply feel GOOD?
The day before Malala Yousafzai became the youngest ever recipient of the Nobel peace prize, my 2nd graders debuted this song as part of our "Around The World" showcase.
The inspirational lyrics come from her speech to the UN, which she delivered at age 16: "One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world." The song and accompaniments are easy enough for children to grasp, yet follow pedagogical concepts for good teaching practice. The piano part is simple enough you may find an older student or parent to play it. Students also get to use pens and books as instruments! They love getting creative here.
This song also features the opportunity to develop community by having an easy-to-learn-right-at-the-performance part for the audience to sing, as well as involving classroom teachers singing tiny solos, and even showcasing your American Idol future contestant rock star student with an auditionable solo.
