This integrated study unit is complete with chapter lesson plans, discussion questions, tests, and activities. ONE DAY IN THE TROPICAL RAIN FOREST by Jean Craighead George, is an instructional tool for teaching students about rain forests while integrating English/Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Math, Graphic Organizers and Art. This novel unit aligns with Common Core Standards for Literature and Informational Text since it is informational text, using a fictional plot and characters in a journal format. It was used by Academically Gifted third graders, and grade five students in regular classroom instruction combining reading and science curriculum areas.

The LESSON PLANS, in a bullet format, suggest reading comprehension topics, skills and strategies in BOLD lettering; and offer ways to teach: main idea, author's purpose, author's craft, figures of speech, use of context clues, etc. Other BOLDED lesson topics include math for scale and visualizing, science to extend and connect information, social studies for global understanding, grammar and writing strategies and techniques, and graphic organizers for project presentations.

The DISCUSSION QUESTIONS target mini-lesson topics, and comprehension and metacognitive strategies (questioning, visualizing, connecting, predicting, summarizing). The ACTIVITES focus on the use of graphic organizers to collect and interpret information in a visual product form. These include: graphs, geographical maps, bubble maps, flow charts/maps, tables, charts/spreadsheets, diagrams, comic strip frames, etc. They are on-going and stored by each student in a portfolio/folder to be submitted at the end of the unit; or may be group/partnered activities for bulletin board displays or individual project boards (homeschool).

The TESTS are for assessment of mastery of reading skills and strategies, and for practice in the application of test-taking strategies: referencing the text, eliminating unreasonable responses, and selecting key words. They are intended to be used as instructional tools.
