This is a creative writing unit inspired by the classic Jack Nicholson film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The film, based on Ken Kesey's novel, is first viewed by students, but only till McMurphy (Nicholson) falls asleep the night of his going away party; at that point, turn the film off and introduce this creative writing assignment in which students must create the ending themselves. This 9-page short fiction unit includes a 1-page overview of the writing task and requirements, deadlines in the writing process, primary characters in the film, and tips for writing fiction; a 1-page parent letter and permission slip, detailing the purpose of viewing the Academy Award-winning film and stipulating details of the R-rated content; a 4-page sample short story demonstrating proper dialogue style, attribution, paragraph structure, etc.; a 2-page peer evaluation form for in-class assessment of first drafts; and a 1-page teacher evaluation form for summative assessment of final drafts.
