Just Ask Judy

This versatile kindergarten math resource with a watermelon seed theme can be used to teach, practice, or review the concept of one less and one more than a given quantity or number. There is a set of half-page mats, in color and black/ white, with quantities of watermelon seeds 1-10. Students use counters (black beans, pony beads, small buttons) to show one less and one more than the given quantity in the appropriate columns. There is space to write the numeral that represents each quantity. A recording sheet is included. There is also an open-ended half-page mat. Pick a card, roll a die, or spin to find your number. You’ll find a partner or small group game along with 2 follow-up worksheets (with the same format). I have included a handy helper number strip showing quantity with a sliding card to highlight your selected number, one less, and one more; to provide support as needed. These activities can be used in guided math, intervention, or resource groups or as an independent math center. Please note that the counters that will fit on these mats are small. Be sure your students have the necessary fine motor skills.
